Basava Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Basavanna, the prophet, poet, philosopher and the founding saint of Lingayat tradition. This day is significant and celebrated with great fervour in South India, especially Karnataka.

He brought a transformation in the lifestyle of Dalits to match with the needs of the time and launched a three-tiered process of Education-Agitation-Organisation so that they can overcome all social barriers.
